At Biospherics, the company with the government contract to provide the official Y2K hotline, operators access hundreds of thousands of database entries from their desks to answer the callers' Y2K questions. In less than a month after establishing the hotline, 1-888-USA-4-Y2K has recieved more than 80,000 calls.

Project manager for the Federal Information Center Stephen Smith works for a private company called Biospherics who is helping the White House to avert Y2K anxiety. In less than a month after establishing the hotline, 1-888-USA-4-Y2K has recieved more than 80,000 calls. To answer peoples' questions, Smith says, "you don't need to be a professor-just be able to talk to your neighbor." He also says that "what makes our people special is we have access to information, and human skills."
