Since July, Paul, his wife Mary and their three young daughters have lived without electricity, running water or indoor plumbing in a trailer on a 14-acre plot of land in Virginia. Paul says his move to the country is the culmination of a long-time dream to simplify as the country continues a frantic dash to the third millennium. "We live this way because we want to, not because we have to," Paul says. "I've always wanted to rely on my abilities, to sink or swim on my own merits." Calling his preparation for possible effects of the Y2K problem a "fringe benefit," Paul asserts that "if everything goes bad, we are prepared for it." Here his family breakfast on Sunday morning before they attend church. Their trailer is heated by a wooden stove and they use kerosene lamps for light. February 2 - Photo by Millennium Picture Group
