Cara Liberatore belays fellow climber Supy Bullard during a recent day of ice climbing near Bozeman, Mont., as her dog, Trek, stands at her feet. At 27, Liberatore is the youngest member of the Women's Century Expedition, a team of six women who plan to climb 26,901-foot Cho Oyu in the Himalayas this spring to become the only all-woman expedition of the millennium to summit an 8,000 meter peak unassisted. The other team members are climbers Georgie Stanley, Caroline Byrd, Kathryn Miller Hess and Liane Owen. Sixteen other all-woman expeditions have attempted to climb 8,000 meter peaks, but none has ever succeeded without oxygen or Sherpa support, according to Bullard. The women leave for Katmandu in early March and hope to summit by the end of May.
