Call for Millennium Beacons Along Themes

Plans call for beacons of light to ring in New Year’s Eve 2000 in London

The company behind the 24ft-high beacon lit by the Queen at Tower Bridge on Millennium Eve wants to extend the display this New Year to cover every bridge along the Thames.

Inspired by the Evening Standard's successful campaign to secure funding for another firework extravaganza this year, Beacon Millennium is calling on local businesses along the river to help make the beacon display a financial possibility.

The company has been providing beacons for 17 years of celebrations the length and breadth of the country, including VE day and the towering inferno that complimented the millennium celebrations.

The company already receives sponsorship from the Millennium Commission, but the body ceases to function next year and he would like the chain of beacons to become an annual event.

Last year's party along the river, called Big Time, was acclaimed round the world as one of the finest, and hailed the best by CNN.

Organizers say the first beacon to be lit in London would be the national one, representing the entire country. I would like to see it lit jointly by a representative from the north of the river and someone representing the south of the river. It would be a symbol of a united London."
