STORY: The Year 2000 is just beginning - many events still planned around the world The firework shows are over, the confetti has fallen and the noisemakers are put away, but that sure doesnt mean the party is over. The year 2000 is being celebrated all year long and many events and festivals are planned well into this year. For many countries its a chance to increase tourism in their area as they schedule millennium events to bring more and more out-of-towners into their city. Special festivals, activities and exhibitions are being planned all around to make traveling a bit more fun this year. Heres a look at some events taking place this year and Web site information so you can plan your millennium vacation. Its a yearlong party that is taking place around the globe and there are plenty of options to choose from. In Hong Kong, you'll find the bulk of festivities grouped around Chinese New Year celebrations, Feb. 5 to 21. A Chinese New Year Parade will take place eon February 5. An International Arts Festival will run from February 11-27 and Cirque du Soleils Saltimbanco will take place for about a month from January 25- February 27. Events begin in February and run all the way through August 2000. You can find out details at www.millennia-mania.com. The British continue their millennium celebration all year long with some of the attractions they built specifically for the New Year. Events are planned at the Millennium Dome and other attractions. There are several festivals planned along the River Thames, a Tall Ships 2000 race and the Alton Millennium Festival. It lasts from June 1 through October 30 in Hanover. Theres a calendar of events listed at www.expo2000.de. Australia has been big into the Year 2000. Sydney threw a big bash on New Years eve and the party just continues as the country gears up for the Summer Olympics in Sydney. The Olympics will take place from September 15 to October 1. While the New Year day parties are over you have to remember the new year is officially just beginning and you can bet countries around the world are planning to cash in on the Year2000.
