STORY: UN gets ready for Millennium Summit by using the tools of the Internet The United Nations has launched a special millennium website. The web-site was set up in preparation for the Millennium Summit which will open in September of next year. The Millennium Summit will be the largest-ever gathering of Heads of state and Heads of government and will consider challenges facing the United Nations in the new century and how best to meet them. The Summit will open on September 6, 2000 in New York at the United Nations headquarters. The new web-site was launched initially in English but will be available in other languages in the future. It can be accessed at www.un.org/millennium. Design for the web-site was supported by the Together Foundation, a private operating foundation committed to providing assistance to non-profit organizations, United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental organizations with their information, networking, database and telecommunications needs. The Together foundation is in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. "The Together Foundation undertook this project because it is in keeping with our mission to promote the open flow of communication and exchange of ideas among nations," said Martha Vargas, Executive Director of the Together Foundation. The new web-site will provide information on preparations leading up to the Summit, including the United Nations regional hearings. The site will also link to many other Millennium Assembly related events, among them the "Millennium Forum", to be held on May 22-26, 2000 at United Nations Headquarters.
